Benefits of Maze Activity Sheets

Planning & Problem Solving

Completing a maze requires your child to use planning, organization, strategy and memory. These are skills required for variety of complex or novel tasks he or she will face throughout the everyday. Practicing them will help your child face new challenges, from planning a sleepover to managing emotions. This type of skill is also referred to as executive functioning. Executive functioning helps kids and adults to organize their thoughts and actions, manage time and maintain focus.

Fine Motor & Visual-Motor Skills

When your child uses a pencil to complete a printable worksheet, he or she is practicing fine motor skills necessary for everyday functioning. Practicing writing, eating, picking up small objects and fastening clothing helps kids to master this complex skill to the best of their abilities. Some kids initially struggle with writing utensils and benefit greatly from a handwriting tool such as a pencil grip or Writing CLAW. In addition to maze worksheets, encourage your kids to draw and scribble, feed and dress themselves, and engage in games and activities requiring grasping skills.

Mazes also require your child to visually scan his or her worksheet in order to identify possible solutions. Proper visual scanning allows us to quickly look for and identify relevant information in our environment, and allows us to take in important stimuli while avoiding distractions.

In children with Autism, visual scanning may be abnormal or absent. Because scanning is a prerequisite for a variety of other skills, developing a child's scanning abilities is critical.
Teaching a scanning response isn't as simple as providing a maze activity sheet; this skill must be built from the ground up. Start by enticing your child with his favorite food to elicit a scanning response, then move to objects and eventually your finger until only a verbal cue is delivered.
Each step of this procedure should be mastered before moving onto the next.

Benefits of Letter Jumbles

Letter Recognition

Being able to recognize and identify the letters of the alphabet are the foundation of a lifetime of reading and writing. Alphabet recognition includes the ability to identify and name letters, associate letters with their sounds and distinguish between visually similar letters such as M and W or d and b.
Practice letter recognition with fun worksheets such as these, The Alphabet Song, ABC flashcards and by pointing out letters during everyday activities such as grocery shopping.

Spelling

Spelling naturally follows on the heels of letter recognition. Games and activities focused on letters help to reinforce all of the skills your child needs to turn letters into words. Helping your child learn the letters that comprise his or her name is a wonderful way to strengthen their identity and build self-confidence.

Have Fun, Build Confidence

We always like to reinforce that, above all else, your child's ability to learn and thrive starts with confidence. Self-confidence helps your child be fearless of failure and gives them the motivation to try again when they do fail. You can build confidence in small, everyday ways: by assigning tasks you know your child can accomplish, by reinforcing it's OK to ask for help and by providing praise even when mistakes are made.
